Sunny first visit to Ladbrook
SAGS were blessed with a sunny, rain free day at Ladbrook Golf Club on Friday, 11th October. A new course, for many but an interesting challenge in terms of the length of many of the holes The second nine posed added ‘excitement’ with ditches criss crossing the fairways making for tactical decisions as to how to reach the greens. Nigel Mills won the day with 29 points with Alan Brewer coming second with 27.
The golfers in the picture are, from left to right seated, Graham, Eric, Chris, Nigel.; standing Alan, Richard, Tony.
The consensus over a very tasty and substantial sausages and mash was that Ladbrook would be a good venue to return to both in terms of the quality of the course and the hospitality in the clubhouse..
Happy visit to Coventry Hearsall Golf Club
I don’t think that I have played on a more well maintained and manicured course. We all very much enjoyed the day., If I lived closer to this course I would like to play it on a regular basis. I am looking forward to a return.
The winner of the May Fu Tu trophy was Richard Watkin with 33 points just heading off Alan Brewer on countback into second place.
Guest winner on countback Ken Lewis from Gwyn Owen both with 28 points. Nearest pin’s on 6 & in 2 on13, Tony Giles. No birdie 2’s recorded.

Disappointment in July and August
Unfortunately, the meetings at The Springs in July and the August meeting at Wrag Barn Golf club had to be cancelled as we did not meet the minimum number required the clubs set for a society, this number is generally16 persons. This is very unfortunate and sadly a sign of the times that to get the prices we achieve for each meeting we need to hit a minimum number of golfers. To give a couple of examples, at The Cotswold Club Chipping Norton if you just want a round of golf its £50, Broadway is £75. This does not include any drinks or food. This seems to be a sign of the times sadly and our members are not prepared to pay that sort of money for a round of golf.
Our September meeting is a new one for us it is being held at the Coventry Hearsall Golf Club, Beechwood Ave CV5 6DF. This is parkland with fairly easy walking. A brook provides an interesting hazard. If you would like to play and boost our numbers please call Alan or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173.

Golfers rewarded with fish & chips
We had another good day at the Bicester Golf Club apart from trying to find our way around this redeveloped 9/18 hole course.
Our winner on the day was Eric Blincoe with 36 points playing off 25, Eric will be cut 0ne shot next time out and Nigel Mills runner up with 35 points off a Handicap of 20. Nearest the pin on the 3rd. Alan Brewer and in 2 on the 10th Tony Giles. No birdie 2’s. We had not played Bicester for some years and all those attending enjoyed the course along with the fish and chips that followed.
The photo shows the winners left to right, Nigel Mills, Eric Blincoe, Alan Brewer and Tony Giles.
If you would like to join us on the 16th August we are at Wrag Barn in Wiltshire, just a 45 minute drive away from Steeple Aston. Its a noon meet for a 13:00 start. Usual numbers for more info Alan 340423 / Chris 347173.

Father and son triumph at Wychwood
Our first meeting was at The Wychwood Golf Club where we had 18 players commit themselves to trying to play golf!!
The day was won by Teddy Kay, pictured above with his father Martin. He scored 37 points playing off 6 who will now be cut two shots, so next time out Teddy will be playing off a 4 handicap. Runner up was Dad Martin with 36 points off a 7 handicap. Martin was also nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th hole having driven through the green some 280 yards away. Vaughan Billings was nearest the pin on the 6th hole and our guest prize went to Stewart Carrol with 35 points off 24. No birdie 2’s recorded.
Our June meeting will be reported at a later date.
Our July meeting on the 19th is at The Springs, Wallingford OX10 6BE.
If you’re a golfer and have never played this course then come along and join us, you will not be disappointed in fact you will be in for a treat. This parkland course bordered by the River Thames, within which lie three lakes and challenging wetland areas. A very typical American design. I just love the old club house which overlooks the 18th green.
We meet at 12 noon for a 100pm start, for more information please call Alan or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173.

It’s the usual suspects if you want to show some interest in coming along. Alan 01869 340423 / Chris 347173.
If I hit the ball left, it’s a hook. If I hit the ball right, it’s a slice and when I hit it straight, it’s a miracle.

Mike has worked hard in trying to keep the costs down but like every thing else golf clubs have increased there prices dramatically, We have gone for a one plate meal and knocked the pudding on the head which might upset one or two members, but hey, they will thank us in the long run.
We usually meet at 12 noon and as always if anyone would like to join us on this our first meeting of the season, please give Alan or Chris a ring on 01869 340423/347173
Golf, the ideal game for people who don’t get enough frustration during the week.
Monsoon conditions for golfers’ last match
This was our last meeting of the year which was held at the North Oxford swimming baths!!
The teams that went out early took advantage of the drier conditions on the course. My group went out last and finished 5 holes from home due to the monsoon blowing through at that time. The greens were 2-3 inches under water, so no chance of putting on them. I was soaked to the skin in my supposedly waterproof clothing. It was nice to get back into the changing rooms and wring my socks out along with the rest of my clothing. I for one will never forget my last game ever at North Oxford.
The winner of the GPK Insurance cup Cup with 35 points Brian Kay, runner up Jack Kay 34 points. The winner of the Chairman’s Cup, this was for the most points on the par 3’s, Jack Kay 12 points. Our guest prize went to Mark Brewer. Nearest the pin on 11 went to Mike Brown. The other nearest pin in 2 is still out there, somewhere under water I presume.
Next seasons venues 2024
17th May – The Wychwood
14th June – Bicester Hotel Golf & Spa
19th July – The Springs
16th August – Wrag Barn
13th September – Coventry Hearsall Golf Club
October – possibly Ladbrook Park, Solihull.
We thank Mike Brown our fixture/handicap secretary in securing these venues which look like a great day out for you budding golfers and all the hard work that Mike has put in throughout the year. I would also like to thank Chris Cooper our sec/treasurer for his tireless work in keeping our books and records straight, you will always get a smile from Chris. Paul Kay has presented us all with a shirt for next season with which we thank him and promise not to put on any weight over the winter period.
Until next year, happy golfing

Fourteen play at The Vale
The fifth game of the season, was at The Vale near Evesham, a well-presented course with wide fairways in a beautiful woodland setting. The greens had just been hollow-tined, sanded and watered and this led to noticeably lower than normal scores.
Fourteen players turned out on the day, with Mark Lawrence winning The Hogs Back Trophy with 32 points, on count-back from Mike Brown. Mark will be cut one shot for winning. Nearest the pin on the 5th was Tony Giles and nearest the pin in 2 on the 17th was Martin Kay. Tony Peck holed a birdie two, with Martin Kay sinking two of them! The ‘Under 25 point’ rule has been applied to Paul Kay, Chris Cooper, Eric Blincoe, Jack Kay, Tony Peck and Tony Giles who will all get an extra shot at North Oxford.

Kay family dominate at Wrag Barn
The fourth game of the season was at Wrag Barn where the weather was a warm 24 degrees, and the course was in good condition as always. Fifteen players turned out on the day, and it was a Kay white-wash with Teddy Kay winning with an excellent 37 points playing off of 4, two shots clear of runner-up Martin Kay. Teddy will be cut one shot for winning and one shot for scoring 37 points or more. Nearest the pin was Jack Kay and nearest the pin in 2 was Martin Kay. George and Teddy Kay had birdie twos.
As Doris Day sang in 1956 “Que Sera Sera, What will be will be”.
Our next and final meeting is on Friday, 13th October when we will be playing at North Oxford a course which SAGS has visited before. This may well be our final game at this course as the colleges want their land back and intend to turn it into a housing estate. The Chairman’s Cup & GPK Cup will now be played for at this meeting. We will meet at 12 noon and as always if anyone would like to join us on this our final meeting of the season please give Alan or Chris a ring on 01869 340423/347173

Golfers enjoy visit to The Springs
Friday, 15th September’s meeting is at The Vale, Bishampton, Pershore. WR10 2LZ. This course offers an American-style layout, with large greens, trees, bunkers and several water hazards. Its rolling fairways provide a testing round, as well as superb views of the Malvern Hills. Picturesque and peaceful. Its a 12 noon get together for a 13.00 start.
If anyone out there fancies playing at this Jack Nicklaus designed course please call Alan or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173

A warm day in Buckingham
The second game of the season was at Buckingham where the weather was very warm, and the course was in good condition. The steep climb up to the first green sorted the men from the boys – or rather the youngsters from the oldies!
Fifteen players turned out on the day, with Teddy Kay scoring a fantastic 38 points off a six handicap to win the Cardale Challenge Trophy. Like Jack in our first meeting, he will be cut one shot for winning and one shot for scoring 37 points or more. Brian Kay came second with 34 points. Nearest the pin was Paul Kay who holed for the only birdie 2 of the day. Nearest the pin in two was Teddy Kay. The guest prize went to Mark Lawrence, who has subsequently become a member – welcome Mark.

First meeting of 2023
Steeple Aston Golf Society’s first meeting of the new season was held at The Wychwood Golf Club in Lyneham near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. I mention this in detail as one of our guests finished up in Crewe, Cheshire some 110 miles away. You know what men are like, I know where it is I don’t need a Sat Nav. He was given the coordinates by one of our members days before the event, just in case you ask.
Its a shame as he missed a really good afternoon of golf. The course, which is nestled on the fringes of the Cotswolds, was looking the best that I have ever seen it, lakes and streams enhance the challenge of the course with water coming into play on 8 of the 18 holes.
The food was excellent and the staff were very welcoming as always.
The guest prize went to Ken Lewis on 27 points. Nearest pin on the 6th was Martin Kay and on the 18th in two Alan Brewer. Only one birdie 2 Brian Kay.
Our July meeting on the 21st is at The Springs, Wallingford OX10 6BE.
If you’re a golfer and have never played this course then come along and join us, you will not be disappointed in fact you will be in for a treat. This parkland course bordered by the River Thames, within which lie three lakes and challenging wetland areas. A very typical American design. I just love the old club house which overlooks the 18th green.
We meet at 12 noon for a 1.00pm start, for more information please call Alan or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173.

Golfers follow Bing and Bob down the fairway
SAGS final meeting for the year was held at Temple G.C. near Maidenhead. We have always introduced a new course each year and this open parkland course did not disappoint. This lovely old clubhouse had pictures of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby teeing off and going down the first fairway.
Sixteen players attended, Tony Giles winning the May Fu Tu Trophy playing off 14 with 38 points. In second place on count back was Jack Kay off of 17, 37 points. Our guest winner was Ross Carroll off 12, amassing 41 points, only to find out later that this was his home course.
Nearest the pin on 13 was Vaughan Billings and on the 18th in two was Mark Lawrence.
Mark and Ross also picked up the 2’s money.
The team prize went to Robbie Robinson, Mark Lawrence and Tony Giles scoring 105 points.
Our booking agent Mike Brown has been busy securing next year’s meetings, and all that I can tell you is that the new course for us to visit will be The Worcestershire.
Like any organisation things like this just don’t happen. Its a year of planning, being involved, taking part and caring to look after other peoples’ enjoyment whilst getting a buzz from it yourself. So a big thanks to Mike Brown, Chris Cooper and our chosen captain Paul Kay for the year.
If you’re reading this and think, do you know what, I wouldn’t mind giving this a go, well come and join us next year you would be very welcome. Call Alan or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173.
And finally for this year. Two Mexican detectives were investigating the murder of Juan Gonzalez.
“How was he killed?” asked one detective.
“With a golf gun, the other detective replied.
“A golf gun?!
What is a golf gun?” “I don’t know. But it sure made a hole in Juan.”
Happy golfing, have a great Christmas and a safe New Year.

Studley Wood winners
The fifth SAGS meeting of the year was at Studley Wood. There were 13 players, with Nigel Mills coming out on top with 34 points, closely followed Tony Giles with 32 points. Nigel’s handicap has now been cut by 1 shot for the last match of the season.
The nearest the pin was won by Tony Giles (there were vicious, unsubstantiated rumours that he then four putted) and amazingly no-one hit the 12th in two shots.
“The only time I took a 1-iron was to kill a tarantula, and I took a 7 to do that”

Lots of prizes on Captain’s Day
The fourth SAGS meeting of the year was Captain’s Day at Naunton Downs, with 16 players enjoying a warm afternoon. This course is going through a few changes to put it mildly. A couple of the holes have been altered to accommodate a race horse gallop through the middle of it.
The winner with 37 points (for 17 holes) was Vaughan Billings with Danny Phillips runner up with 35 points. Vaughan’s SAGS handicap has now been cut by three shots for the rest of the season. There were nearest the pin prizes on all five par 3s, and these were won by Martin Kay, Alan Brewer, Mike Granville (twice), and Brian Kay. The longest drive was won by Stanley Kay. The winners of the team prize were Eric Blincoe, Jack Kay and Alan Brewer. Thanks to Captain Paul for a great day with so many prizes.
SAGS play their last meeting of the season on Friday, 14th October, 11am arrival at Temple on the Henley Rd. Hurley SL6 5LH.
This is an open parkland course with extensive views over the Thames Valley. Firm, relatively fast greens, natural slopes and subtle contours provide a challenging test to golfers of all abilities. Excellent drainage assures play during inclement weather.
We have had a few enquiries over the season, why not make this one and have a great day out with like minded friends, you could also bring a friend with you if you want.
If you would like to join us then please contact myself or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173.

Third SAGS match attracts 17 players
The third SAGS meeting of the year took place at The Springs, Wallingford, with 17 players enjoying a warm afternoon.
The winner of the Jubilee Cup with a splendid 40 points playing off a handicap of 27 was Eric Blincoe, Paul Needle coming second off 18 with 37 points, Paul will now be off 17. Eric’s SAGS handicap has now been cut by four shots for the rest of the season, this may seem harsh but we don’t muck about when it comes to winners. The nearest the pin on the 8th was won by Tony Peck and nearest the pin in two shots on the 17th by Martin Kay. There were birdie twos from Paul Kay and Brian Kay.
September’s meeting on Friday the 9th is at an old favourite “Studley Wood” in Horton-Cum-Studley. OX33 1BF.
We will meet at 12 noon for the usual bacon bap & coffee, play 18 holes on this gentle undulating woodland course set in a former deer park. Tranquil setting with an abundance of wildlife. USGA specification tees and greens, with lakes coming into play on nine holes. During the presentation of prizes and silly chatter we will be having a two course meal. I read it somewhere that if you have more than 3 people in a gathering then you must have a raffle! so this is all rounded off with a raffle. Those not in the frame for a golfing prize always look forward to the raffle.
If you would like to join us then please contact myself or Chris on 01869 340423/347173.

Golfers enjoy a warm afternoon – more to come!
The second SAGS meeting of the year took place at Wrag Barn, with 12 players enjoying a very warm afternoon.
The winner with 31 points was Jack Kay, with Vaughan Billings coming second on count-back from Martin Hurst, with 30 points. Jack’s SAGS handicap has now been cut by one for the rest of the season. The nearest the pin was won by Jack Kay and nearest the pin in two shots by Stanley Kay. There were birdie twos from Brian Kay and Danny Phillips.
Overall, points were relatively low, reflecting the difficult of the playing conditions, therefore handicap adjustments have been made for anyone scoring under 23 on the day rather than the standard 25 points.
Report on the meeting at “The Springs” on 15th July to follow.
Friday 5th August 12 noon meet, 1300 first Tee
Our captain Paul Kay has chosen Naunton Downs for his day out. This course plays over beautiful Cotswold countryside. A valley running through the course is one of the main features, creating one par 3 hole that crosses over it. The prevailing wind adds extra challenge to the Par 5s (which play into the wind), combined with small undulating greens. Postcode GL54 3AE.
If you would like to play and support Paul then please contact Alan on 01869 340423 or Chris 347173.

Captain’s Day at Kirtlington
Our last meeting was the Captain’s Day at Kirtlington, playing for the GPK Cup.
Kirtlington is described as an inland Links course, just because there are too few trees does not make this a links golf course. Some of the greens perhaps were links like i.e. large with switchbacks, undulations and pins in difficult positions for the amateur golfer.
This was won by Jack Kay with 36 points. The runner-up was Mike Brown with 34 points. Nearest the pin was Paul Kay and nearest the pin in two was Jack Kay. Our guest prize went to Richard Watkin with 30 points and there were no Birdie “2”s.

Golfers at The Wychwood for Jubilee Cup
Our last meeting was at The Wychwood, playing for the Jubilee Cup, this was won by Danny Phillips with 36 points playing off scratch. Runner-up was Paul Kay with 34 points playing off of 15. Nearest the pin on the 6th was Mike Carron on the difficult par 3 over water and nearest the pin in two on the par 4, 11th was Alan Brewer. Our guest prize went to Neil Brewer with 35 points and the Birdie “2”s was won by Danny Phillips and Brian Kay.
SAGS captain Martin Kay chose Kirtlington for the September venue venue. Results will follow soon.
The final meeting of the season will be at The Cotswold Club, Chipping Norton on the 15th October. This downland course is situated 800ft above sea level, its undulations providing a good walk. On a limestone base, the course dries quickly in wet conditions. The opening few holes provide a good test of golf made more difficult when the prevailing wind makes the player use the extremes of the course. If you fancy a game with a great bunch of people, all abilities welcome please call Alan 01869 340423 or Chris 01869 347173.

Husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses.
“Help me dear,” she groans to her husband.
The husband calls 999 on his mobile, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter, and lines up his putt.
His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. “I’m dying here and you’re putting?”
“Don’t worry dear,” says the husband calmly, “they found a doctor on the second hole and he’s coming to help you.
“Well, how long will it take for him to get here?” she asks feebly.
“No time at all,” says her husband.
“Everybody’s already agreed to let him play through.”

Our road map to playing golf seems to be sort of getting on track, The Wychwood unfortunately is not possible on 7th May, however The Springs say we are ok for 11th June so that will be our first meeting of the year.
For more information please contact Alan or Chris on 01869 340423 / 347173.
March 2021
Dear Fellow Golfer,
We hope you and your families have kept well during this unreal time.
This time last year we were blissfully unaware of what would befall us in 2020. Who would have imagined that we would lose a whole SAGS season and that the older ones amongst us would be shielding, with golf being restricted to carefully-regulated sessions between the various lockdowns.
Looking at 2021 we would like to think that this will be a full year of SAGS meetings and as such will be asking Martin Kay if he would remain Captain for the coming year.
In 2020 as we were cancelling our matches with clubs, in most cases, we were able to agree a revised date with them for 2021.
Therefore please put these dates for the first three meetings in your diaries:
Wychwood – Friday 7th May
The Springs – Friday 11th June
Wrag Barn – Friday 2nd July
At the moment COVID still has a grip on us and movements look to be restricted for some time yet. However, we are hopeful that we will be able to start the season as planned with the meeting at Wychwood.
Obviously we are very keen for these events to take place, but we are very conscious of your safety. In our experience, golf clubs have been extremely good at implementing COVID rules. However, it is also worth bearing in mind that as we came out of previous lockdowns, most clubs didn’t allow Society fixtures, in order to give their members priority. There have also been restrictions on meeting in the clubhouse, and on catering.
Playing golf is what brings our Society together, but equally important to us is the pleasure we get from each other’s company, so the prospect of playing ‘car park golf’ (just turning up, straight to the tee and no socialising afterwards) isn’t appealing. We are sure that you would agree that this should be a major factor when deciding whether or not to go ahead with a fixture.
Anyway, we will continue to review the situation and keep you informed, and really hope to see you all in May.
Happy Golfing
Alan, Chris and Mike

The 2020 Programme
Is it a moment of excellence in a period of mediocrity?
I would like to know how long that lucky period lasts, as this year my golf has been outstanding. The judgement comes from your peers along with your handicap reductions and the matches and trophies that you have accumulated.
Every time you play a round of golf your score card is entered into the computer for handicap adjustments. At the start of the spring season, my handicap had crept up to 16 following the cold, wet, winter, but by the end of the season it had gone down to 12.
I have adjusted several things to achieve this – I went for a slightly fatter grip on my clubs, replaced the studs in my shoes for better stance and stability and gained more control of the ball, by shortening my full swing to a three-quarter swing. I am also hitting the ball further, not only off the tee, but also by hitting the second shot from the fairway with more accuracy.
My putting has also been a strong part of my game, especially when in two games I scored 42 and 43 having putted only 22 and 23 times. There’s an old saying ‘Drive for show, putt for dough.’
Jack Nicklaus once said, ‘Sometimes the biggest problem is in your head. You’ve got to believe you can play a shot instead of wondering where your next bad shot is coming from.’ All in all that bit between my ears is enjoying its Purple Patch.
Oh, I nearly forgot to mention my very first hole in one, on the 15th at Burford back in October, in a Cotswold Club v. Burford match.
A successful run in sport is understood to be a Purple Patch – supposedly from the fact that Roman Emperors used to wear purple togas. So just watch out for my spring collection in 2020!

Presentation Evening
Ending the season with a great day at Stratford
Our final meeting of the year was held at Stratford- on- Avon Golf Club, we were welcomed by the club secretary Kay and Arthur our starter for the day who made sure we got off to a good start pointing out the do’s and don’ts on this wonderful parkland course founded in 1894. The club has close links to Samuel Ryder who was Captain in 1929, the year Britain beat the USA at Moortown.
The winner of the May Fu Two trophy was Lawrence Cole 36 points (second from left), runner up Paul Needle also 36 points but lost it on count back.

Guest winner Matt Jolley 41 points (far left). Matt also picked up the prize for 2nd shot nearest the pin on 13.
George Kay NP on 10.
Birdie 2’s Lawrence Cole and Tony Giles.
We ended the day with a splendid carvery & homemade sticky toffee pudding. This was a really enjoyable day and we look forward to returning next year.
A warm thank you from all the members of SAGS went out to Chris Cooper and Mike Brown for all their hard work in the running of our society.
Happy golfing!

Captain’s Day at the Cotswold Club
As I type out this report, George’s Captain’s Day was on Friday, 9th August the weather was very Caribbean, today it’s chucking it down, 14C and windy. Oh the joys of living on an island.
George’s day out was held at the Cotswold Club, Chipping Norton. The course could not have been in better condition, it truly is one of the best in the County. Results are set out below. I have been looking through our archives to see if there is anywhere that says you cannot win your own trophy, well played George, you are now playing off 3.
The picture shows (l to r) Brian, mystery prize, David, guest prize, George, checking the rules and Alan, runner up.

The Cardale Challenge Trophy
Another wonderful day out with Steeple Aston Golf Society (SAGS) at The Oxford Golf Club. The course was in pretty good condition apart from there not being enough sand in the bunkers and one or two rakes had gone missing. The weather was very kind with beautiful sunshine all afternoon.
On the fourth hole, a short par 3, the tee off area is close to a primary school where they were finding golf balls in the playground, so they asked the club to move the teeing off area for the children’s safety, which they did at great expense. However, balls were still being found in the school playground. Members were complaining over a period of time that their golf ball went missing by the time they walked to the green. The culprits were the crows who were lifting the balls in their beaks off the green and dropping them in the school playground. So no birdie on that hole. 16 players with over half of the field scoring 30 points or more.
The above photo showing the winners of the day. Tony Giles birdie 2, Mike Carron nearest pin on the 4th and a birdie 2, Brian Kay nearest the pin in 2 on the 14th. Mike Carron runner up with 36 points and the overall winner of the Trophy Alan Brewer with 39 points.
We have two meetings in August, Friday 9th for our captain George Kay, to be held at The Cotswold Club, Chipping Norton, the second meeting is the re-arranged Burford Golf Club on Thursday 22nd. It would be good to see as many of you as possible especially if you haven’t played with us before, come along as a guest. Please call myself on 01869 340423 or Chris 347173.
Happy golfing.

A Washout in June
Burford was our second meeting of the season but unfortunately this didn’t take place due to the heaven’s opening up and flooding not only the greens but also the bunkers and fairways. Their Secretary called us to cancel our day and have offered us three alternative dates to suit our members so watch this space for further information.
On Friday, 5th July we shall be playing at The Oxford formerly known as Southfield, home of the City, University and Ladies Clubs, and well known to graduates throughout the world. A challenging course, in a varied parkland setting, providing a real test for players with some fantastic par fours and cracking sets of par threes. We meet at midday for a bacon bap and coffee, first tee off at 1pm Hill Top Road OX4 1PF. 01865 242158.
Please call if you would like to join us 01869 340423 or Chris 347173.

Wychwood in May
Our first meeting of the season was at the Wychwood Golf Club, Lyneham.
The course played well with lush fairways and fast greens.
The above photo depicts our winners of the day. Captain George Kay playing off of 5, holding the Richard Cardew trophy which he won on count back from his Dad Brian both on 35 points.
Tony Giles was nearest the pin on the 6th. George was nearest the pin with his second shot on the 18th having almost driven the green. The only Birdie 2 money was picked up by, yes you guessed it, George, who has now been cut to 4.
Burford is our next meet, this is a parkland course with mature tree lined fairways and high quality greens. OX18 4JG is the postcode if you would like to join us on Thursday 13th June, please call Chris 01869 347173 or myself on 340423.
Happy golfing

Studley Wood in October
I must start by congratulating Europe on their 17 1/2 to 10 1/2 win over the USA in the Ryder Cup last month held at Le Golf National on the western outskirts of Paris.
Europe’s captain Thomas Bjorn had selected 14 players who could not only play golf, but could also gel together and knew how to enjoy themselves for three days in front of thousands of spectators plus the world’s media. I think that that was the difference between us and the Americans. It was obvious that they were not enjoying being out there, they were arguing and scrapping amongst themselves, just not team players.
Steeple Aston Golf Society was formed 20th June 1988. For our 30th anniversary we played at Studley Wood in the village of Horton-Cum-Studley, a par 72 course set in undulating woodland which was a former Deer park.
Pictured here are some of the Studley Wood winners from left: Paul Needle, Tony Giles, Brian Kay, Tony Peck, Alan Brewer.
There were many prizes to be had at this meeting, but you had to be called Tony if you wanted to be amongst the top prizes. Results as follows:
Chairman’s Cup front 9, Tony Giles playing off 12, 17 points.
Hogs Back Trophy, Tony Peck playing off 27, 37 points.
Runner up Tony Giles, 36 points.
GPK Insurance Cup, all par 3’s, Tony Peck, 11 points.
Nearest pin 11th, Paul Needle.
Nearest pin in 2 on the 6th, Brian Kay.
Birdie two’s, Tony Peck and Alan Brewer.
Until next year, Happy Golfing

Stratford Park in August and Cotswold Club, in September
Our annual Captains Day on August 24th saw an impressive turnout, 25 players, to play at a new course in Stratford-Upon-Avon which used to be called Ingon Manor and renamed Stratford Park. This par 72 course had lush fairways due to the sprinkling system throughout the course, fast greens and deep bunkers.
Wet weather gear was off and on during our four hour round which gave you time whilst sheltering to have a look at the stunning views across Warwickshire.
Brian Kay introduced two additional competitions, Pairs & Mystery Par 3’s, in addition to our normal stableford game. This helped to keep, in a fun way, “a competitive edge” throughout the day. The day went very well with some good golf being played on a challenging course, handicaps were proved to be fair as nobody “ran away” with any of the competitions.
Following a lovely meal and a few drinks the winners received their rewards : Captains Cup went to Brian’s son Paul, Pairs Trophy to Paul Kay & Mike Carron, Mystery Par 3’s to Geordie Mawson, Nearest the pin to Chris Cooper & Longest Drive to Matt Johnson. A great day with wonderful people, we thanked Brian for putting up the many prizes to be won. I am sure we will return to this course in the not too distant future.
Sunday, 16th September saw our annual game against the cricketing Exiles held at the Cotswold Club, Chipping Norton. Another great day, with pleasant golfing weather.
This was a very close contest played on excellent greens, although too fast for some of the players, all rounded off with a good meal.
Honours went to, Longest drive 13th, Peter Burwell, nearest pin 10th, Mark Brewer, nearest pin 15th, Maurice Finlay.Birdie 2’s Neil Brewer, Maurice x2, Alan Brewer. Best stableford score, SAGS Alan Brewer 39 points, Exiles Scott Powles 33 points.
Overall winning team by three points Exiles. The above photo shows Alan shaking hands with their winning captain Neil Brewer.
Our last meeting of the season is at Studley Wood on the 5th October and once again, if you are reading this and would like to join us then please call me on 01869 340423.

Burford Golf Club – July
Our meeting at Burford was hot, humid and dry. The ball ran and ran on the dry brown fairways, sometimes this is a good thing but when conditions are dry like this you just don’t know which club to use on your approach to the green, if you come up short will it bounce left, right or straight on. There were many tales of woe and if only’s, along with notable anecdotes.
Out of the 20 players here are the winners with very good scores.
1st place Martin Hurst 40 points off 24.
Runner up Mike Granville 37 points off 16.
My guest from the Royal Cape in South Africa, John Batchlor 39 points off 9.
Nearest the pin 8th hole Eric Blincoe.
2nd shot nearest the pin on 13, George Kay.
Birdie 2s George Kay, Brian Kay, Martin Hurst and Pete Burwell.
This was a great day out and everyone is looking forward to our Captain’s Day at Stratford Park Hotel & Golf Club on 24th August. As always, if you are reading this and would like to join us then please call me on 01869 340423 or Chris 01869 347173. All genders welcome.

Wrag Barn Golf Club – June
Another wonderful day out with Steeple Aston Golf Society (SAGS) at Wrag Barn Golf Club. The course was in excellent condition and the weather, after a damp early morning, was very kind with beautiful sunshine all afternoon.
We were playing for the The Cardale Challenge Trophy and the Kays dominated the day with Martin winning with 41 points and father Brian runner up with 38 points. Needless to say that Martin has been cut 3 shots & Brian 1 shot. George Kay took the Longest Drive with a 300yard “smack” and John Damm won nearest the pin. Myself and Lawrence Cole shared the Birdie 2’s pot. A very enjoyable day as always, rounded off with a good meal and a few beverages.
If you are interested in joining us at our next meeting at Burford Golf Club on 6th July – Tee off from 1.00pm, please contact myself or Chris Cooper (01869 347173)
Alan Brewer, Chairman
The Wychwood Golf Club – May
Friday, Star Wars day May the 4th saw the start of SAGS first outing of the season at The Wychwood G.C. Playing conditions were excellent as Spring had finally sprung.
18 players were like coiled springs and couldn’t wait for the off, oh what they were going to score around the course was the conversation over their coffee & bacon bap.
Some of them had not played since putting their clubs away back in October and it showed.
We held a moment of silence and reflection for Steve Bell who had sadly passed away. Steve was a founder member of the society and will be sadly missed by all.
Everyone talks about the carvery at the Wychwood and so they should as it was excellent. Steve would have loved it, along with the stories that were told.
In the photograph from the left, honours went to past Captain Tony Peck, runner up with 32 points, plus the only birdie 2 of the day. George Kay longest drive, I think he broke the 300 yard marker. Captain Brian Kay holding the Richard Cardew Trophy 37 points. Alan Brewer nearest the pin.
If you would like to join us on Friday 8th June we are playing at Wrag Barn, Highworth.
Please call Chris on 01869 347173.
Happy golfing
Alan Brewer, Chairman

April 2018
Welcome to another SAGS season – here is a brief outline of what we have in store for the coming season.
Firstly, last year’s Captain Tony Peck had a great year and we wish to thank him for his tenure and welcome this year’s Captain Brian Kay. Good luck Brian.
Secondly, unless you tell us otherwise, Chris and Mike will continue to carry out the Secretary Job jointly. In general, Mike negotiates with clubs about dates and prices for the coming season while Chris deals with the money side and the management of individual fixtures. Our Chairman, Alan, providing a guiding hand, suggestions and advice, as well as organising the Exiles fixture and prizes for each fixture
Fixtures for 2018
We have made the following provisional bookings for 2018:-
4th May: Wychwood Golf Club (18 Holes)
8th June: Wrag Barn (18 Holes)
6th July: Burford Golf Club (18 Holes)
August: Captain’s Day (Date / Venue to be confirmed)
16th September: SAGS v Exiles – The Cotswold Club
5th October: Studley Wood (18 holes)
As you can see we have retained two old favourites – Wychwood and Burford. After a very positive approval rating for Wrag Barn from those who played last year, we will return again this year. We have decided to drop North Oxford this season and to go to Studley Wood, a course we are sure you will enjoy.
Provisional costs vary from £42 to £55, but the exact costs will be shown on individual invitation sheets.
Handicap Limit
There are new regulations coming into force in the golfing world in January which may affect your handicap if you belong to a golf club and your handicap is 28 (Ladies 36) or over. In theory, your handicap can now go up to a maximum of 54 – look on the internet for CONGU Changes 2018 for detailed information on this.
However, SAGS will continue to limit handicaps to 28 (Ladies 36) this coming year. People with handicaps over this limit are most welcome to play, but will play off of these maximum SAGS limits.

2017
The Chairman reflects………
We have finished our society games for this 2017 season so I have put together a little of what it’s all been about.
Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer.
Golf you hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins, on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.
Golf if you find you do not mind playing in the rain, snow, even during a hurricane, here’s a valuable tip… your life is in trouble!
Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot.
A ‘gimme‘ can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers… neither of whom can putt very well.
Golf’s an interesting thing… It no matter how badly you play, it’s always possible to get worse.
Golf’s a hard game to figure. One day you’ll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the bunkers and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all your game really stinks!
If your best shots are the practice swing and the ‘gimme putt’, you might wish to reconsider this game.
Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you.
Golf is like marriage, If you take yourself too seriously it won’t work, and both are expensive.
The best wood in most amateurs’ bags is the pencil.
Best wishes from all in the Golf Society.

Final 2017 meeting at North Oxford
SAGS final meeting of the year was held at the North Oxford Golf Club. Twenty members and guests took part on this bright sunny day which was reflected in the higher scores achieved.
Pictured above holding the Chairman’s Cup is next year’s Captain Brian Kay, alongside is Becca Smith winning the Ladies Prize, this season’s Captain Tony Peck holding the Hogs Back Trophy and George Kay standing in for his brother Paul who won the G.P.K. Insurance Cup.
Our thanks go out to our secretaries Chris Cooper and Mike Brown for their hard work. They are busy booking next year’s venues so why not come and join us in 2018.

SAGS v Exiles at The Cotswold Club
On Sunday 17th September our annual SAGS v Exiles/nomads match at The Cotswold Club, Chipping Norton. Twenty-three “Golfers” contested the match on a beautiful sunny day on a well presented and challenging course. However, unfortunately due to some SAGS members not achieving their true potential and one no show, we LOST. Despite this minor setback, we had a great day with good food and enjoying wonderful company capped with all the wrong people winning the raffle (as usual).
Results as follows: SAGS combined stableford scores 271 points Exiles/nomads 283. Honours went to Richard Edmonds 35 points for the Exiles/nomads, Alan Brewer 33 points SAGS. Longest drive on the 13th Paul Bradshaw, Nearest pin on the 3rd Neil Powles, I feel he should also have had the longest drive as he drove up from Devon that same morning, on the 15th Craig Bedding. I would just like to point out that they were all Exiles/nomads winners, There were no birdie 2’s, that money went into the raffle and blow me down, they won that as well. Hence the handkerchief in the photograph.
With The Cotswold Club at almost 750 feet above sea level I shall be taking my team out for some high altitude training prior to our rematch next September. Neil Powles is seen here receiving the Dennis Neville Memorial Trophy. Sorry Dennis, next year I promise!!
There will be a report next month on our last golf outing of the season at North Oxford. The Kay’s clean up again, mind you there are four of them.
Alan Brewer, SAGS Chairman
Captain’s Day at Stratford
Another very successful meeting at Stratford-on-Avon Golf Club for our Captain’s Day, weather was good, course in wonderful condition and hospitality was excellent. The Kay boys took the honours with Brian (Dad) winning the May Fu Two Trophy and his son George taking the Captain’s Trophy. Lawrence Cole won longest drive and Mike Brown (not featured in photo) nearest the pin. Overall a very enjoyable day.
Our final meeting is at North Oxford on Friday 13th October. This is a beautiful parkland course of 5,800 yards, very tight in places with many trees to negotiate. You have to think your way around this short course if you want to score well.
Why not dust off those clubs and join us, you would be made very welcome. Contact Chris on 01869 347173 or myself on 01869 340423.
“I’d give up golf if I didn’t have so many sweaters” Bob Hope.

Forthcoming matches
Tony Pecks Captain’s Day will be played at Stratford on Friday, August 25th. All welcome.
Chairman Alan Brewer writes:
“Our next meeting is at The Cotswolds Club Chipping Norton. This is an annual event sponsored by Andy Neville for the Exiles (retired cricketers) in memory of his father Dennis, who was a member at Chippy and a long standing supporter of SAGS. The match is played in a very good spirit, we tend to mix and match depending on numbers but generally about 24 turn out.
“The date is Sunday, 17th September teeing off at 12:36pm. If you would like to play in this match please contact me on 01869 340423. Arrive at 11.00 am for bacon baps and coffee, play 18 holes followed by a one plate meal, many prizes to be had. All this for £35 at the weekend, can’t be bad.
“Golf is all about if’s and putts.”
7 July: The Burford Golf Club
Chairman Alan Brewer writes:
“On the 7th July Steeple Aston Golf Society spent another day in paradise at The Burford Golf Club, This is one of those venues that you know will not disappoint.
“The weather helped with some low scores coming in for the Jubilee Cup which was won by Tony Giles 42 points playing off 10 now cut to 8. Runner up Bill Sandhu 37 points off 20, cut 1 shot. Longest drive our captain Tony Peck, Nearest the pin Geoff Clarkson and the only birdie 2 sinking a 30 foot putt Chris Cooper.
“Next venue Friday 25th August at Stratford for our Captain’s Day, all welcome.”
9 June: Wrag Barn Golf Club
Chairman Alan Brewer writes:
“ A wonderful sunny day playing on a lovely well laid out course that was in superb condition. It challenged the best. A thoroughly enjoyable day.
The winners, pictured here, were:
Winner – Brian Kay (36points) (Handicap – 12)
Runner Up – Tony Giles (35points) (Handicap – 10)
Longest Drive – Lawrence Cole
Nearest Pin – Chris Drake
Guest Prize – George Kay
Our next meeting is at Burford, this a very popular parkland venue, on Friday, 7th July. If you would like to join us contact either myself Alan, on 01869 340423 or our secretary Chris Cooper, on 01869 347173.”
12 May: Wychwood Golf Club
Steeple Aston Golf Society had its first meeting of the season on the 12th May at The Wychwood Golf Club; 21 of us met at midday for bacon baps and coffee with anticipation to the playing order and the revised handicaps.
Now it’s not rained for 40 days and 40 nights, well it made up for it along with hailstones.
This reflected on the poor scores returned by half the field, no doubt hoping for another couple of shots to be given back on their handicap, (no chance).
Before we got to the prize giving, Wychwood provided us with a sumptuous carvery and a choice of six puds.
Honours board – nearest the pin on the 6th, Geoff Clarkson, Geoff also got a two, the only one of the day so he picked up all the 2’s money. Longest drive on the 16th, Martin Kay, somewhere around 280 yards. Martin also won the guest prize with 38 points playing off 19. Members of SAGS were playing for the late Richard Cardew Challenge Trophy, runner up on count back with 35 points Eric Blincoe playing off 25 and in first place 35 points Paul Needle off 12, well played Paul.
Our next meeting is at Wrag Barn on the 9th June this is a great course, have a look at it on the website and if this whets your appetite for a round of golf, give me a call, you will be made very welcome.
Asked why he had a new putter Tommy Bolt replied “Because the other one didn’t float”

Looking forward to September’s matches
There is no fixture in August. The match against cricketing exiles on 18th September is now fully booked with 32 players itching to get on the first tee at the Cotswold Club, playing for the Dennis Neville Memorial Trophy.
Captain Paul Buck has chosen Stratford on Avon Golf Club for his Captain’s Day which will be well attended, however we can always find you a place if you are reading this and would like to play this fantastic golf course. Please call me on 01869 340423.
May all your 3 footers be gimmes

18 September: SAGS v SACC “Nomads” (Cotswolds Club, Chipping Norton)
Steeple Aston Golf Society v Steeple Aston Cricket Club “Nomads” previously named as “exiles” played the annual golf match for the “Dennis Neville Memorial Trophy” at the newly named Cotswold Club Chipping Norton on a bright, warm, windless, Sunday afternoon with no excuses and we got stuffed!! 6 1/2 to a 1/2. Sorry Dennis.
Now whether it was the new format of Texas Scramble that the Nomads insisted on playing, or the ringers that were introduced due to a couple of no shows, or just the inability of the golfers on the day. I would like to think that it wasn’t the latter but just in case, I have sacked the lot of them!!
The picture above shows Nomads captain Neil Powels receiving the trophy from Andy Neville, plus, below a view from the 5th two tiered green looking back up this par 5.
Joking aside, it was a cracking day with some great golf played at this magnificent course. You can always tell what sort of day it has been by the banter, laughter & noise in the club house whilst we were having our meal.
The prizes were shared for nearest the pins on all par 3’s & the two longest drives.
The raffle prizes kindly donated by our sponsor Andy Neville, SAGS & the Nomads were also equally shared rounding off with a donation to a Young Dementia Charity.
The Nomads team (how many names do you recognise) from your school & cricketing days led by Neil, Scott & Dave Powels, Mark & Neil Brewer, Andy & Craig Bedding, Simon Burwell, Alex Damm, Richard “I thought it was a 1:30 start” Edmonds, plus friends. Well done lads and just to let you know I am working on a new format for next year.
Alan Brewer, Chair
(I got the half with my partner Vaughan Billings after Mark & Andy hit their second shots out of bounds into the car park, oops)
